Guinea pigs are naturally shy animals but with regular, gentle handling and care they make excellent, friendly, vocal pets for adults and children alike. There aren't many small animals that "shout" at you for attention. Guinea pigs are often bought as first pets for children. They are small enough for them to handle and rarely bite or scratch. Very young children should always be supervised when handling their pets as they could accidently squeeze them with tragically fatal results.
Housing
There Are Many Different Types Of Hutches Which Are Especially Made To Suit Indoor And Out Door Conditions.
Those Kept Indoors Can Be Come Very Tame, Very Quickly Providing They Are Cleaned Out Regularly.
Indoor Cages Should Be As Big As Possible, positioned In A Suitable Place With No Draughts Or In Sunlight.
Outdoor Hutches Should Be Large And Strongly Made.
At Least 2 Inches Off The Ground And Have An Enclosed Sleeping Area.
In Winter The Hutch Needs To Have A Blanket And Waterproof Material Over It To Protect The Guinea Pigs From The Weather.
They Must Be In The Shade In Summer As Heat Can Kill Them Very Quickly!
Also, Water And Shade Should Be Available At All Times.
Bedding
My Guinea Pigs Have A Thick Layer Of Newspaper In Their Cage.
Over The Top Of That They Have Either Sawdust Or Hay.
I Reccomend Bails Of Hay From The Nearest Farm As It an Be Much Cheaper, Especially If You Use Alot!
Cleaning Out Should Be Done Once A Day.
Feeding
Guinea Pigs Are Herbivores.
They need fresh water, hay, fresh vegetables and guinea pig mix. Hay should be available at all times, it helps keep piggies teeth worn down and aids digestion. Fresh water is best given in a drip bottle as bowls of water quickly become contaminated. Guineas should be given fresh vegetables every day as like humans they cannot make their own vitamin c. Most guinea pig mixes have added vitamin c but this should not be solely relied upon to provide enough. Guineas love various kinds of vegetables ,fruit and salads. Mine are mainly fed spring greens, carrots, celery, cucumber and apples (apples should be fed in moderation as they are acidic and can cause mouth sores) Other fresh foods they enjoy are brussel tops, green cabbage, cauliflower leaves, parsnip, beetroot, kale, grapes and melon.
It's important to feed at roughly the same time each day as like most animals guinea pigs thrive on routine and come to know when it is feed time.
